Dr Alexander Mentzer, Principal Investigator and Senior Clinical Researcher at the CHG, has been awarded a prestigious NIHR Oxford Senior Research Fellowship for 2026.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Senior Research Fellowship is designed to support outstanding mid-career researchers who are poised to become the next generation of translational research leaders. The scheme recognises exceptional potential in advancing research that drives meaningful impact on public health and patient outcomes.

Dr Alexander Mentzer is one of several researchers from the University of Oxford’s Medical Sciences Division selected for this award. His appointment reflects not only his significant contributions to infection immunogenetics but also his potential to shape future research directions that benefit both local and global health.

Alex’s research focuses on using human genetics to uncover what makes individuals more susceptible to infection and how this knowledge can be translated into improved public health strategies. His work combines genomic analysis with large-scale cohort studies to investigate how genetic variation influences immune responses to infectious diseases — ultimately aiming to inform prevention, treatment and vaccine design.

As a Senior Research Fellow, Dr Mentzer will receive dedicated support to further develop his translational research programme and enhance his leadership role within the NIHR research community.
