Course Director
Gavin Band
Gavin Band
directs the Genomic Medicine and Statistics DPhil course and is Associate Professor and Head of Statistical Genomics at the Centre for Human Genetics, University of Oxford. He leads a research group focussed on using genetics to understand the epidemiology, evolution, and fundamental biology of malaria infection and disease, in collaboration with research groups globally.
“GMS students are the future of genomic medicine. You will be part of an amazing cohort who are doing some of the most exciting research across the University. Our students come from an incredibly diverse range of academic fields which is a real strength of the programme. If you have a passion for delivering on the potential of genomics in human health we would love to hear from you”
Julian Knight, Professor of Genomic Medicine
COURSE CO-DIRECTORS
COURSE CO-DIRECTOR
IRA MILOSEVIC

Ira Milosevic is Professor of Neuronal Physiology and Pathology, and Principal Investigator at the Centre for Human Genetics. Her group works to investigate fundamental aspects of exocytosis, endocytosis and synaptic vesicle recycling that have relevance to neuronal and brain functions. She has previously held positions at the Yale University School of Medicine and at the European Neuroscience Institute in Göttingen. She currently holds a John Black Fellowship in Parkinson's Disease.
COURSE CO-DIRECTOR
HELEN LOCKSTONE

Helen Lockstone is Head of Bioinformatics and Training at the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics. Helen co-ordinates the overall GMS teaching with Gavin Band, and oversees the programming and bioinformatics workshops which are delivered by members of Bioinformatics Core.
COURSE CO-DIRECTOR
DAVID CHURCH

David Church is Professor at the Centre for Human Genetics, and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology. He runs a research group focussed on tumour genomics and immunology. A core part of his research involves seeking to integrate multi-layered genomic and immunological data to define key features that enable tumours to grow, adapt, and escape immune detection.

"This DPhil programme is one of the most important activities of the Centre for Human Genetics. We are training and nurturing the next generation of data scientists who really appreciate that sometimes data can be messy and results confounded, requiring intensive QC and assessments of reproducibility"
John Todd, Professor of Precision Medicine
