James Bancroft
PhD
Cellular Imaging Core Facility Head & NDM SRF Network Lead
I am Head of the Cellular Imaging Core Facility (CICF) at the Centre for Human Genetics, where I lead a team of three specialists supporting a diverse research community. We work closely with researchers to design, execute and analyse imaging assays across a wide range of biological systems, from cells and organoids through to tissues and whole organisms.
Since taking on this role, I have focused on expanding both the technological and analytical capabilities of the CICF. Through successful grant applications and strategic industry partnerships, I have helped to bring cutting-edge imaging platforms and analysis workflows into the department, ensuring that our users can tackle increasingly complex biological questions with confidence.
My background is in advanced imaging assay development, and I am an expert in multiple microscopy modalities, combining experience from both academia and industry. Before joining the CICF, I spent over three years working in industry at the forefront of microscopy innovation, and six years as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Oxford, where I used live-cell imaging to investigate how cell division is regulated. I particularly enjoy collaborating with researchers to turn challenging imaging ideas into robust, quantitative experiments.
In addition to leading the CICF, I play an active role in the wider Small Research Facility network within the Nuffield Department of Medicine, helping to foster collaboration and sustainable access to advanced technologies.
