Helena Carley
Research fellow
Helena joined the CELS group in October 2023.
Helena has an interest in ethical decision-making in clinical practice, with a particular relevance to clinical genetics and genomics. She completed her MSc dissertation with the CELS group, entitled, ‘How can we foster situated ethical decision-making in clinical genetic practice?’ awarded by City St George’s, University of London, 2023. Her main research interests are how communities of practice can support ethical decision-making and incidental findings in genetic medicine.
Helena co-organises meetings of the UK Genethics Forum, and is a member of the British Society for Genetic Medicine Ethics and Policy Committee.
Helena qualified in Medicine from the University of Bristol in 2010, also completing an intercalated BSc in Physiology in 2008. She completed Foundation training in the Kent Surrey Sussex Deanery, and Core Medical Training in the West Midlands Deanery. She commenced training in Clinical Genetics in the London Deanery in 2016 and was appointed a Consultant in Clinical Genetics at Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust in 2025.
Helena’s main clinical interest is inherited cancer genetics and she was an elected committee member of the UK Cancer Genetics Group from 2021-2024. She currently works with the CELS research group alongside her clinical work.
