Hong Harper

Senior Data and Software Engineer

I have been responsible for data management within the DIL group since 2017, leading the design and development of data systems, software, and databases that underpin the group’s scientific research.

Before joining DIL, I worked in the Unit of Health-Care Epidemiology at the Big Data Institute, University of Oxford, where I led the development of large-scale databases containing England’s national hospitalisation and mortality records.

My academic background is in Computer Science and Web Technology, and I have experience with multiple programming languages, including Java, C#, Python, and PHP. I am proficient in both relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL) and NoSQL systems (MongoDB, Elasticsearch, etc.).

I also have expertise in a range of data engineering tools and platforms, including Apache Airflow for workflow orchestration, Apache NiFi for data integration, dbt for in-warehouse transformations, Apache Kafka for real-time data streaming, and Microsoft SSIS for enterprise ETL processes.
